Throughout the past decade, Costa Rica has consistently been one of the main pineapple exporters worldwide. This is because the ministries that ensure the quality of this fruit have guaranteed that national proposals comply with international recommendations for maintaining standards of excellence.

Which initiatives ensure the quality of pineapple cultivation in Costa Rica?

As we mentioned, international recognition of the high quality of Costa Rican pineapple cultivation has been part of the effort to expand production, and to contribute to the socio-economic and environmental development of the country. This is included in the worldwide initiatives that we’ll outline here.

Pineapple cultivation committed to Sustainable Development Goals (ODS)

From 2010 to 2018, Costa Rica, in association with PNUD (a global United Nations network that works for human development) worked on a project called the National Plan to Strengthen Responsible Pineapple Production and Commerce in Costa Rica. The goal has been to promote changes that help farmers and their communities to have a better life.

The action plan specified tasks that strengthen the pineapple planting and production experiences, in order to care for the environment, communities, and people.

According to the National Chamber of Producers and Exporters of Pineapple in Costa Rica (CANAPEP), the pineapple industry has been able to lower poverty rates in regions where pineapple is cultivated, as more than 30 thousand jobs have been directly created.

Social, corporate, and environmental responsibility working for quality cultivation

The quality of Costa Rican pineapple isn’t only enjoyed for its taste, but can also be seen in socio-economic growth, and environmental responsibility that creates sustainable development, and complies with sustainable development goals.

National proposals such as the Manual of Good Agricultural Practices for the Production of Pineapple in Costa Rica, created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) along with the State Plant Health Service and the Agricultural Extension Service, are initiatives that guarantee the quality of this tropical fruit.

Quality certifications: Efforts made by companies to guarantee the safety of pineapple cultivation

Before concluding, it’s important to emphasize that in Costa Rica there are more than thirty companies dedicated to pineapple production. CANAPEP verifies that they have the international quality standard certifications, in order to guarantee the safety of the product.

Pineapple Company S. A. is a family company that has been dedicated to pineapple production for more than 15 years. Currently, they have two international certifications: Global G.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance, which ensure the quality of their processes.

The quality of pineapple cultivation is a result of good practices related to national production, as well as the efforts of the international community which has worked throughout the past decade to ensure pineapple quality.
